Vitra Design Museum Re-Envision Design Model

Week 12 Independent Study

Vitra Design Museum is Gehry’s first building he designed in Europe. The main body of the building consists of many curved surfaces. Except for the back side, the other sides all have curved surfaces. As the Vitra Design Museum was a product before the Computing-technology Age, the treatment of many curves was not ideal and looked unnatural and rough. This is the mile stone of architecture structure turning from stiff and strict style to smooth and natural style. However, it was still in the experiment stage. In fact, Gehry attaches importance to sketching by hands because most of his architectural inspirations came from visual art. I am focusing on the improvements of the curved surfaces this time to transform the Vitra Design Museum into a modern museum – Vitra Design Museum II for exhibiting modern furniture. The 21st century has completely new design concepts. Simplicity, practicality and fashion are promoted in the first place. My Vitra Design Museum II will be under the light of this direction.
For interior structure, I am thinking of the interior space. I have made the rooms of the museum into cuboid spaces. There is no door between rooms. I used glass as wall instead of other materials to divide the hall and the exhibition space on the first floor. The purpose of this design is to make the museum looks more spacious. I added a glass sphere located between the first floor and the second floor. Since the sphere is transparent, people on the second floor will be able to see the conditions on the first flour, appreciating the top view of the exhibitions. This will also increases the natural light penetration to the first floor.
I have eliminated all the unwanted curved walls that look ambiguous and messy for the exterior look change. I scraped the roof flat. The main gate and the helix staircases were reserved. The other walls were changed into rectangular shape. Almost 70% of the wall are substituted by French windows. To make museum look more like a home place, the sunshine is one of the most important factors I have to consider. The second most important change was that I added a balcony to the original model in order to exhibit outdoor furniture such as barbeque grill, potted plants, table and chairs for garden, and so on.
